Bluetooth Traffic Surveys

Overview

Bluetooth sensors detect, encrypt and store the unique identify code (MAC address) from passing vehicles and devices carried or worn by pedestrians. By matching these codes between sensors we build a deep understanding of journey characteristics including Origin/Destination, Journey times and repeat trip patterns.

What are Tracsis Bluetooth sensors?

Installation Design & Project Management

Our experienced specialist team plan, manage and execute Bluetooth tracking surveys with a great eye for detail, considering optimum sensor locations to capture the required data while considering the health and safety implications of the installation locations.

Whilst our equipment is safe, fast and efficient to set up and calibrate, great care is taken to ensure accurate and relevant data is captured.

Tracsis Bluetooth surveys are different?

Whilst other Bluetooth systems are available they are often designed for permanent installation and purely for vehicle journey time analysis. Tracsis have developed the equipment and data processing systems specifically for temporary Origin-Destination and Journey Analysis data collection projects for the transport planning profession. Since we introduced the technique to the UK in 2011, we have completed over 120 Bluetooth survey projects in the UK, Ireland and Australia, involving over 2,000 separate sensor installations.

Public and site team safety

Comprehensive method statements and risk assessments are completed to ensure safety for both the public and our site teams. The unique self-contained design and advanced remote set up features of our units minimises time on site for installation and calibration. The ability to scan from the roadside across distances of up to 100m allows units to be located off carriageway minimising the exposure of staff to moving traffic risks.

Unique Technology
  • A single recording device will cover multiple lanes and can be located off carriageway. No access to carriageways, central reservations or over bridges is required providing significant resource and health and safety benefits
  • Non-intrusive data collection: no visible recording units help maintain driver normality
  • Live ‘health check’ monitoring with checks on battery and data performance to allow pro-active maintenance
  • Fast install and maintenance: typically less than 10 minutes per site
  • Tracsis hold a permanent stock of 150 sensors for temporary surveys
  • Queuing / Platooning traffic will not affect the quality of data
  • Poor weather conditions will not affect the quality of data
  • Bluetooth signals can be detected and recorded up to 110mph
  • No limit to number of units installed, additional units can be placed at car parks, train stations, Park & Rides etc to increase sample and general purpose of survey

  • Sample size in the UK is typically 20% – 30% at each site. Control counts confirm the exact sample size achieved
Converting data into valuable information

Data is uploaded remotely to our web hosted server at set intervals and processed immediately. Filtering algorithms are applied to the datasets removing multiple devices from vehicles and validating the content of all data before publishing results to the web based reporting suite.

Reporting can be configured to provide real time, live data for critical operational decision making for events and traffic management operations and/or provided post data capture for post-event project analysis and reporting.

As part of the inception process we agree the data analysis process, matrix formation and format and content of the reports. This will include the assumptions to be made behind the creation of origin-destination matrices (for example journey time and OD logic filters), time periods for analysis.

Origin & Destination and Journey Time analysis and data visualisation is provided through our web hosted analysis software to which client are allocated a personal login. Various reports can be selected and viewed in the browser or exported to Excel for further manipulation.  Sample screen shots are shown below:
